Safe, clean, quiet decently priced 2 star hotel

I have to admit I was very nervous to stay in this 2 star hotel, but this and the Wyndham Travelodge were all that were available and I am glad I chose Downtown Berkeley Inn. It is a small motel with rooms around a small parking area. Front desk staff extremely kind and helpful. We were in room 309. PROS: It was quiet and clean. No safety concerns about people loitering outside the hotel, no weird old musty smells, no bugs, never heard another guest despite it being completely full when we were there (those were my worst fears). Mattresses were clearly new, super comfortable. Shower water pressure was great and despite it being an older bathroom they had a u shaped shower curtain bar that made for more space than showering . Hairdryer in room and decent toiletries. Wifi was good. Super convenient location to walk to Cal and everything in the area. Relatively inexpensive. CONS: You get what you pay for, it’s an older motel, so some stains on carpets, bathroom floor/tub, duvet covers.

Avoid!!!

I have stayed in many hotels all over the world but never experienced that the room is not cleaned for a whole week. It was promised high-speed Wi-Fi but it didn't work at all. Did not see any staff all week except at check-in. Avoid!

Did not stay here, be aware they don't send out email reminders of your upcoming stay

We had planned on staying here to visit our son at UCBerkeley for the homecoming/family weekend. Be aware that this hotel does not send out reminder emails of your upcoming visit and so if you change your plans and forget to cancel, you will not receive a reminder email a few days before your (now cancelled) trip and they will charge you for the room under their cancellation policy. Every other hotel chain, hotel, boutique hotel, and travel booking service I am aware of sends you a reminder email, so if you missed cancelling any part of your plans, you get a reminder email that allows you enough time to cancel those parts of your itinerary that you had forgotten to cancel. But not here at the Downtown Berkeley Inn. It's more important that they get your money than your patronage.
I happen to be a cancer patient, and had a last minute opening for a consult with my oncologist that has allowed me to move my treatment up by a month. The appointment happened to be on the afternoon of the day we were going to be flying to Berkeley for this stay. Silly me that I had less important things on my mind such as having my cancer treatment sooner rather than highly critical things like cancelling a hotel stay at a two-bit hotel that doesn't send out reminder emails. And so we were charged for the room as a no-show.
While I can't say what the property itself is like, I can certainly say that the attitude of the owner was very combative, defensive, and has zero empathy. We certainly won't be staying at this unfriendly hotel ever.
There are a lot of options of places to stay in Berkeley, I recommend staying elsewhere with friendly staff who care for their clientele and work to get your repeat business. For example, we stayed at the Berkeley City Club when we did get to complete our trip this past weekend--very friendly, clean, and well maintained and just as convenient to BART, the campus, and restaurants.

You would be better off finding another place to stay

We checked in after 11 pm. Our room had a very musty oder and the fire alarm kept pinging due to a low battery. We were told to move to another room. Admitedly the new room smelled much better. But my son had to take an on line course and the internet was far less from optimal. When I mentioned this to the owner I was told the router was in our room and the signal should be very strong. I then found the router tucked in a hard to reach spot and it was not even plugged in. Once I plugged it in the signal was strong and my son was able to take his course the next morning. A word of warning there is massive construction taking place on the road next to the inn and it is quite loud in the early morning. The one major advantage to this inn is its proximity to campus as well as to Telegraph Street. It is 7 minute walk to both. Otherwise I would not recommend the facility at all. It really needs more than a face-lift. It needs major surgery.

Motel with deferred maintenance needs

I don't know who wrote the headline description, but this is a motel that has a good dose of deferred maintenance. The room I was in was in need of paint, the metal door frame around the bathroom door was heavily rusted, the heat/ac unit did not work (but they had a space heater and fan in the room, so obviously I wasn't the first to notice), and the wi-fi did not work (they said they would rest the router when I asked but it didn't make a difference). No light over the desk workspace. On the plus side, they do have glass cups for coffee (& one single cup pouch for the 4-cup drip pot). High on the convenience and low price benefits, but I would not return.
