Beautiful, historic hotel in the heart of the city

Middleton's Hotel is wonderful. The historic central building is beautiful, the interior decor tasteful and refined, and the rooms lovely, comfortable and well laid out. We had a highly enjoyable stay and a quiet and restful night's sleep. What's not to love?

Sleepless in York - even Kate and William would have run away from it.

The gardener's effort in maintaining the beautiful garden and his friendly greeting, as well as the beautiful facade, unfortunately masked the quality of the hotel. Unfortunately, we let ourselves be dazzled by the beautiful pictures when booking.
The majority of the rooms are housed in annexes, as can be seen in the photo.
There is no elevator at all, which is why you have to carry your suitcases up to the first floor yourself. At around 12 sqm, the room was more of a broom closet. The only window in the room was the size of a loophole and could not be opened. The air conditioning was loud and failed to cool down the room. In addition, it hung 1.50 m to the side above the bed and blew directly onto the bed.
There was no exhaust ventilation in the bathroom, which caused the steam from the shower to spread throughout the room as well. The shower door was disgustingly dirty.
Due to the heat and the poor air quality, it was not possible to sleep. Around 1:30 a.m., we went to the reception. The employee organized a fan for us, which ultimately helped little. The next morning, the bed was completely soaked with sweat.
Due to the size of the room, it was also not possible to open two standard suitcases at the same time, unless you put the suitcases on the clean bed after rolling them across the city.
At least the breakfast was exceptionally good. After that night, however, it was hardly possible to enjoy it. Measured by the price-performance ratio, this hotel was the worst in a long time.
Goodbye and good riddance!

Dear Wurzelrudi
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I am very sorry that your stay did not meet your expectations.
Whilst I am pleased that you enjoyed our gardens, the friendliness of our gardener, and our breakfast, I am disappointed to learn that other aspects of your visit left you feeling so dissatisfied. Please accept my apologies for the issues you experienced with the room temperature, ventilation, and cleanliness. These concerns are not reflective of the standards we strive to maintain, and I will be sharing your comments with the relevant teams for review.
As Middletons is spread across six Grade II listed buildings, all of which are a maximum of two storeys, we do not have lifts within the hotel. This is a limitation of the historic nature of the property. However, our team is always happy to assist with luggage, and I am sorry if we were unable to make your arrival more comfortable.
I appreciate your recognition of our reception team member who tried to help during the night by providing a fan, although I regret that this did not resolve the discomfort you experienced. I also understand that the room size and layout did not suit your needs, particularly during a warm period.
Thank you again for your feedback. Whilst I am sorry that your stay did not leave you with a more positive impression of Middletons, your comments are invaluable in helping us improve both our facilities and our guest experience.
Kind regards,
Oliver Stott

A lovely hotel in an ideal location for exploring York. The historic building is beautiful and full of character, with charmingly wonky floors and an old-fashioned English atmosphere. The room was small, but had everything I needed and was clean and well maintained. The breakfast was excellent, with a good buffet selection as well as hot dishes made to order, which I particularly appreciated. I also liked the hotel's thoughtful approach to reducing waste with towels and housekeeping. I would definitely recommend Middletons and would happily stay here again on a future visit to York.

Lovely hotel, great location. The only downside is where our room was located, it looked out onto the carpark/road so had to keep our blinds closed all day as people could look in and it was a little noisy at night, however the room the was lovely so asking for a higher room or one in the other buildings would be preferred

Excellent location
