Overdale B&B East Looe

We are going to make our third visit this year in December as we have enjoyed the hospitality and comfort so much so that we cant keep away. The house has been lovingly restored and maintained to an exceptional standard and the view from the front guest room over the river and surrounding woodlands is wonderful. This is a great base to explore the wonderful town of Looe and beyond, knowing that you get a hearty breakfast before you go and an excellent sleep on your return.

Rather disappointing

Overdale is now rented out as a holiday let rather than operating as a B&B and we were really excited about staying there. The photos looked lovely and so our expectations were high.
Overdale sits at a lovely vantage point overlooking the river and a 5 minute walk from the entrance to the harbour. Despite it being on a busy main road the traffic doesn’t cause any disturbance when you are in the accommodation. Unfortunately entering the accommodation is a bit of a slog and one that we hadn’t really been prepared for. On arrival it became apparent that the property sits at the top of a very steep zig zag slope. This property would be unsuitable for anyone who wasn’t very able. The thought of pushing a buggy up the slope wouldn’t be appealing. It took numerous journeys up and down to deposit our luggage into Overdale which was pretty hard work. Luckily there was an empty 1 hour parking space free right outside the beginning of the slope - otherwise luggage would have needed to have been carried additionally across the extremely busy main road as the allocated parking space is in a car park on the other side of the road.
On arriving the lounge was as nice as the photos and the outside terrace a nice addition. However, the dining room and kitchen don’t have the benefit of any great natural light and so are quite dark rooms.
The kitchen felt under equipped for a large group - we were a family of 5. No where near enough plates, cutlery or glasses. The dishwasher was a small one and the sink and draining board also really small. The majority of glasses we used were grubby and needed washing before first use. Only 1 tea towel was left which got wet quickly due to the need to wash up regularly to ensure enough crockery and cutlery. There was a coffee machine but for a particular brand of pods so a cafetière would have been much better. And the cupboards smelt badly of damp which made opening them to get pans out rather unpleasant.
The bedrooms were all nice and had en-suite bathrooms - although there isn’t a bath in the property. The towels that were left were very small and pretty inadequate really and we had to request towels for a room where none had been left. There was also an issue with the shower in the top bathroom - a new door had been fitted and siliconed on the morning we arrived and we were asked not to use it for 24 hours. This was fine but we ended up not using it at all as the smell of the silicone was extremely overpowering and there wasn’t an outside window to open to ventilate the room.
It was a shame that Overdale didn’t meet expectations as we had felt it was going to be a great base for our holiday. The weather was pretty rotten so we were in the property more than we might have been ordinarily - so maybe if we had been there less it wouldn’t have seemed such a let down. But it just felt like it wasn’t suitable for the number of people it’s advertised for. It needs some investment and a bit more thought and higher quality managing. And less sea side Knick knacks. For the money we paid we’ve had much better in Devon - and been greeted with homemade scone and jam etc. It just felt like the extra touches weren’t there and some of the basics were off too.

Wonderful friendly hosts

We stayed here for two nights in September. The house and rooms were beautifully maintained, and the breakfasts were very good.
If it were not for the slightly difficult location Overdale would certainly rate Excellent. But, the elevated position did mean great views.

Lovely B&B, Great view

We stayed here for one night in July 2011, it's a small B&B with just two rooms which has been recently renovated. Our room had a great view over the river and the room was very clean and comfortable with good facilities. The room also had two chairs to sit and enjoy the view from the bay window. The en-suite facilities were also very good being clean and spacious.
The owners were very friendly and knowledgeable about the local area. They also cooked a lovely full english breakfast.
There is a short walk up a steep slope to get to this B&B but it's worth it as this is what makes the view so good.
