Be ready with your translator app....

How do you rate something that is both genuinely positive as well as negative, with many improvements to be made to refine the place? I am talking about Hostel Ternopil, a place with much potential...but.
Positives:
Comfy mattress and pillow
Each bed had its own reading light, outlet and privacy curtain
Light wood and solidly-built bunk beds
Small kitchen but large fridge
Spacious bathrooms - toilets, sinks and showers are all separated from each other so there was always some place that wasn't occupied by other guests
Close proximity to the center of town, restaurants and the train station
Not such positives:
For being a new hostel, one would think to educate the staff on simple things like smiling, being amicable to the guests and making an effort to communicate, even and especially if a guest doesn't share the same language. I fully understand that English can not be (and doesn't have to be) understood by everyone outside of English-speaking countries, but to make an effort to communicate, rather than shrug a shoulder and go back to Facebook doesn't make anyone feel welcome. Translation apps have made a world of difference in terms of how people travel and communicate when a common language is not shared, but to have this knowledge and just find it a waste of time, or a complete bother, doesn't make the traveler want to leave a good review. I'm not saying every staff member at this hostel did this, but it happened on more than a few occasions with more than one staff person at the front desk and I felt the need to let other foreigners be aware before potentially booking.
This hostel has great potential, even with a foreign crowd, who may not go to Ternopil in droves, but may someday discover what this little town offers. It's a shame not more know about this lakeside town, as it quite lovely.
With some staff training in guest appreciation this could really be a fantastic hostel to come back to.
Attn. those with mobility issues or heavy luggage: depending on the room you have chosen, you may be walking up two to three flights of stairs to your room. There is no lift. Just a warning...

Check-in charge different from the one on the website

Although we booked our beds at Booking.com, the administrator charged us twice as much as the prices stated in our booking. The explanation was simply that "there is a festival in the city, so we changed the prices". Even though by Ukrainian laws we had the right to pay the price we first agreed to, the administrator did not want to hear anything about our rights and laws. They knew perfectly well that, since there was a festival, finding another place to spend three nights would be extremely difficult. We were given no other choice as to pay the double price.
Among other drawbacks I would also like to mention the unsafe locks on the doors and drawers. We were lucky to have nice and honest neighbors, who did not steal anything from us, but if they wanted to, it wouldn't be too difficult. Also, there are no doors in the showers, only plastic curtains, which is not the level of privacy we expected.
On the other hand, the interior is nice and the location is convenient - these two things made our visit a little bit less horrible.
I would recommend this hostel only to people with connections in local judicial and tax system, so that they could protect their rights in a case like ours.
