Originally built in 1894, Dalen Hotel is situated close to the peaceful shores of the Telemark Canal and Lake Bandak. It offers free WiFi internet and free private parking.

Hotel with Charm
Last weekend in May we stayed one night at the Dalen Hotel. This was part of a package we took in connection with the Telemark Channel. It included an aperitif when we arrived at Dalen hotel and three-course dinner in restaurant Bandak.
It was nice weather when we arrived in Dalen, and we were greeted by the hotel's nice little wagon. We chose to walk the stretch to the hotel on foot (10 min walk time), but sent the luggage with the transportation.
The hotel is surrounded by a beautiful garden and beautiful flower beds and trees when you come from the sea side. The drag style makes the hotel special, and the place cheers of charm and ancient greatness.
We got room on the 1st floor with sea view. The room was of good size, and the style is exquisite and old-fashioned. We had a historic double room, with shower and toilet in the room. Details like port wine to the guests and chocolate on the puta in the evening was nice. The bathroom I don't think dressed the style. It felt sterile, but otherwise ok. The shower doors can be closed, but then the space inside becomes very limited. But it was spacious on the floor, so it went well anyway. Good beds, clean and nice.
Dinner in restaurant Bandak was good. Tasty forrite, lovely duck meat, and the dessert was ok, but a bit tam on taste. My mom at 90 was with, and even though she is small-eating, she commented that there was little accessories for dinner. So French cooking with Norwegian ingredients, great presented, but the amount could be a little more. The wine chart had a lot to offer, and the price level was very high. We went for a bottle, but wine package is a good price alternative. There were few options otherwise if one wanted to order per glass.
The service at the hotel is good, especially in the restaurant. The style echoes of old greatness, but henceforth to have driving rules on strict dress code seems misplaced in my eyes. This is something that is completely going away, and fine places like Britannia, Maaemo and other Norwegian great hotels run the style of “smart casual”. We have eaten at Michelin restaurants both in Italy and Spain, nor has this been practiced. Our men chose to go in without dress jackets, but with shirts, and this worked fine. It is good to see that this was not enforced so strictly.
Otherwise this is a hotel definitely worth visiting. It seems well-run in all directions, staff are friendly and serviceminded. A little language problems with an employee at a bar/restaurant, but otherwise good. The building mass is well-maintained, the areas around beautiful.

FANTASTIC ( though expensive) step back in time for true relaxing Norway experience
We wound down our busy trip that had hiking and adventure at the Hotel Dalen. It not disappoint! The atmosphere is one like stepping back in time, with attention to details in both e decor and the gardens outstanding! We were very appreciative of the service and the food. While this is an expensive place to stay, our family found it worth the splurge to allow for relaxation.
I would recommend the 3 course dinner and the afternoon tea ( perhaps ask of they could put more savory vs. sweets on the tea... not sure if that is an option as I had my sugar fill by the end of the tea). Take advantage of the lovely grounds, the ducks, the goats, the walking paths, and the outdoor games. There is a nearby river with lovely lupins blooming that is the perfect place to sit and enjoy all things nature and Norway. We signed up for 2 hours of the near by sauna and dip in the lake ( did private session which you have to sign up for on the Soria Moria Sauna site.. well worth it! This is a luxury place to unwind set in a time of the past.
NOTE: there are no TVS on property. The World Cup was playing so we had a 10 minute walk to the nearby bar at the campground where we enjoyed sitting with the Norwegians watching the match.

a beautiful historic hotel in the heart of the Telemark region
a beautiful historic hotel that has kept all its charm, all its period decor, and has managed to bring modernity to its bathroom facilities. The dining room is very beautiful and the evening meal very good. The downside to its qualities is that it is a historic hotel, so the soundproofing is not great, but the people who go there are mostly couples who go to bed early in the evening. The walk in the park by the lake is magnificent and for the brave, there is an ultra-modern spa sauna that is on the lake. Remember to book this experience in advance, however

Magical couples-adventure
Incredible location, and absolutely breathtaking views. The hotel itself is beautiful, in a well perserved and traditional manner. Super friendly and dedicated staff, making the stay even more magical. Samuel and Kimberly in front of house were great, as well as the gentleman Sheldon in the bar.

Exclusive and unforgettable
This became an unforgettable experience. Well done in all ways. Lovely rooms in a fantastic building, located right by Bandak. Nice to walk around in the garden, as well as sitting out on the porch or in the cosy covered chairs on the playa. Unfortunately I did not try the sauna when it was full-booked, but I bathed in the fjord anyway. 12 degrees in the water was fresh. In the evening there was piano music under the beautiful glass roof inside the hotel. The food was lovely, but some small portions for dinner. It was expensive, but glad we have been experiencing this place.
