Nice, small scale, Local place.

Reservation by phone was easy.
The hotel is easy to find, and has a small private parking. If the parking is full, on-street parking is free and the place looks very safe. I had no hesitation to put my motorcycle on the street.
Small but excellent room (In my case a shared bathroom)
Excellent wifi.
The kitchen closes at 20:00 (and everyone in the room told me so, when I arrived at 1955, a well trained clientele).
But a brief chat with some (local) customers informed the that the “beste ball gehakt van Nederland” (try it!) would still be available. I dined on an excellent meatball and some ice-cream, and it was Great.
The meatball apparently has won some prizes and is now of national fame (I should verify that…)
Sleep was Excellent (I had to kill 1 mosquito).
An Early Breakfast of 0700 was possible (I had to switch on the coffee machine myself). And checkout was smooth since I had paid in cash the evening before.
All in all a recommended place.

Back in the '70s

Had a great stay. My starting point of 2 days hiking of the Frisia Coast Trail. Arrived late at around 19:30h. It is a hotel annex bar. But nobody behind the bar to check in. Only a few young guys standing at the bar, greeting me friendly, and 2 tables with elderly people playing cards. I waited and waited when 1 of the guys made a telephone call without me asking him to do so. There the owner (guess) came in. I asked if there was a restaurant open somewhere. "No," he said. "We only have a snackbar. But if you like I make you something simple. Can make fries salad and meat balls." "Great," I said. I ordered 2 meat balls. He said, "I give you one and when it is not enough I get you immediately another one. The are prepared anyway." So a filling meal. I had Frisian whisky, it Frysk Hynder. The owner asked what time I wanted breakfast. Everything was fine because he was used to Wadden Sea tidal walkers to Ameland island. 07:00 it was. While I was eating 2 meat balls, I observed the card-playing people. They held a competition. And no one speaks Dutch here among each other. Only Frisian. The room was really basic. The window was open. He said, "some like it closed, what you like." A time warp the whole thing. 40 years back, as I can remember things on the countryside when I was a little boy. Enjoyed it so much. Quick go, before it is gone!

As expected.

This is a good and lively town centre pub. Whilst we were there it was busy with friendly local drinkers and visiting cyclists. If travelling by bicycle it is best to give the hotel notice if you want to have your bike under lock and key overnight.
The room was a good size and clean. I found my bed to be on the soft side and not particularly comfortable. Plenty of power points and Wifi was good. There was no in room tea making facility. Noise was not an issue.
Food is served in the downstairs bar area and our evening meal included "The Best Meatballs in Holland" winning dish from a few years ago.
I thought breakfast a little bland and disappointing. No cereal and no fresh fruit other than bananas, apples and oranges. Staff were friendly and helpful.
If you are on a budget and are looking to stay somewhere centrally located, then this hotel is worth consideration.

Very friendly host and waiters. Good break first and nice clean rooms. Also good area to bring a dog. Nice area for bikers and nature interested persons. Remember to visit Dokkum as well not far away and very beautiful city.

Skip if you are used to full comfort, visit if you like to dive into anonymity and adventure

I and my wife + 2 kids wanted to break a weekend away into full quietness and anonymity and chose this old-style hotel in the upper north of The Netherlands, nearby the boat to Ameland.
It is situated in the small village of Holwerd, but don't be misled by this; the hotel is crowded all the time (many 'Wadlopers') and the atmosphere is very nice. The general water and sanitary provisioning on the ground floor is modern and clean.
The rooms have basic comfort, no more than that. As dogs are allowed, be prepared to find a few dog hairs on the carpet.
Quality of food (in comparison to the prices) is good, breakfast basic, but OK (broad choice out of an array of cold drinks (orange or apple juice, Chocomel, Fristi, milk, water).
Not the standard, that one is normally used to, but well suited for adventurous minds !
