Small lodge with lots of nature!
Top lodge with foresight into the plain. Great facilities and very good food. Sunset tour to the neighboring lodge can only be recommended. Very quiet ....and the wine (self taken) on the balcony....just great.

Problems But Has Potential
Really wanted to love this place as the setting was lovely (the stars were amazing at night!) and the tents were nicely set up with a rustic feel. Food was pretty good, especially breakfast. The had an afternoon tea and cake that was nice as well. Dinner was just okay. The hiking trail was not well marked but it was nice to stretch our legs on the property. Fire pit lit at night at the reception/restaurant area was a nice touch as well. Two things impacted our stay.
First, it was really cold at night. Generally not a problem as extra blankets are usually provided. Our tent only had 1 extra blanket that we needed to share between two beds. This was far from ideal and despite the tent having two hot water bottles, it was an uncomfortable night. An extra blanket for each bed would have made a big difference!
The other issue was getting locked in (yes "in") our room. The door mechanism broke (no big deal, things break) — the door was locked at the time and the break meant we could not unlock it to get out. Luckily we had a wifi dongle with us and were able to use WhatsApp to call their 'emergency' number. It took a half hour before someone got back to us and we agreed to wait until the morning (8am) for someone to come and help. No one showed up and so we had to jump off the side of the deck (luckily into the sand) to get out of our room. The biggest service issue was that when we got to reception for breakfast and to check out and explained that no one showed up and how we had to get out of the room — no one apologized. They literally did not acknowledge the inconvenience. Luckily we were fit enough to be able to make the jump — but seriously, at least apologize! Also, the rooms should have emergency air horns. If you didn't have cell signal or a wifi dongle like we did, you would have had no way of contacting anyone in an emergency. Many of the tented lodges we stayed in had the small air horns in case of an emergency.
Also, the lights from the parking area to our tent did not work so we had to use our cell phone lights. Considering the lodge is relatively new, it could use some maintenance checks.
The place has potential... they just need to make sure rooms are properly stocked and customer service needs to be improved. I would perhaps, give it another try and hesitantly would recommend it as it did have some good features.

Staff needs training.
We did not stay at the lodge, hence my personal visit to the restaurant on January, 30th, enquiring whether they are open to the public as well. At reception the gentleman ensured me that they indeed are open and that my wife and I are welcome for dinner. I asked whether I should make a reservation, to which he replied that it is not necessary and that we can just drop in. I had a quick look at the dinner and bar menu and said that they would see us either that same night or the next, Saturday 31st.
We arrived on Saturday night at 18:25. Nobody was at reception, so I called at a side door leading from reception. A lady appeared. We greeted, I said we were there for dinner and asked if we could sit anywhere. She immediately said "No, no, she is done with dinner, she finished cooking for the two (other) guests, that she was not told about any other reservations and that she is actually going to close now and go home". I explained that I was there the previous day and what was said then. She was adament that she can't cook now, that she had nothing left to cook and that she got no notice about us. In the meantime, Anthony (the bartender who recognized me from the previous day) also joined in. He tried to convince her to accommodate us, but she stood her ground like a brick wall. I said that I was very upset, since I have confirmed the modus operandi the day before and that we drove 40 km from the farm to Kalkrand for a dinner. Ultimately, she agreed to make us some chicken schnitzel and chips from the lunch menu.
Although Anthony gave us very good service as waiter and tried to comfort us, the evening was spoiled.

Peaceful retreat at Kalahari – Devil's Claw Lodge, August 2025
In August 2025 we spent some very nice days in Devil's Claws Lodge with a group of seven people. The location in the middle of the Kalahari is impressive – vast landscapes, fascinating light and a soothing tranquility that you rarely find.
The tented bungalows are comfortable and well maintained, with wonderful views of nature. They offer a successful mix of proximity to the surroundings and pleasant amenities. We especially appreciated the silence and the opportunity to really switch off.
The team on site made our stay very pleasant. Antonio and Ricardo as well as the entire staff were friendly, attentive and always helpful. Your relaxed and warm nature has made for a pleasant atmosphere.
The food was also delicious and varied – especially the open-air dinner was a highlight.
Devil's Claw Lodge is a recommended accommodation for those who want to experience the peace and beauty of Kalahari – with good Service and warm hospitality.

Wonderful location on margins of Kalahari desert. Make use of hiking trails of partner lodge 8km away, where we saw giraffes and other animals. Tented lodge accommodation wonderful, but it did get extremely cold at 3 degrees during the night, so minimally ask for an extra blanket depending on the weather forecast. Swimming pool should be closed to save water, extremely cold. Dinner was good quality cooking, but European-international food, not what we have come to Africa for. At least have an African first or main course!
