Nice Words But Not Welcoming for Non Malawians
So I'll get right into it -- after a one hour power outage, my colleague and I went do the bar for hot drinks. The building was cold, obviously, because its winter here and there was no power. The offerings at the bar were not ideal, so we went to the top-floor Vincent restaurant. It was, honestly, less comfortable than the bar, but we were already there. The waitress brought a menu. My colleague ordered tea, which was equivalent of 8 USD -- yes, wildly overpriced. I ordered hot chocolate for the same price but kept the menu to order more. I said it was cold.
However, the waitress refused to serve us, claiming that she cannot serve "only tea" at this "fine-dining restaurant" -- nonsense!
Not only was the restaurant full of local guests only drinking cheap wine, but what type of restaurant would call itself "fine" without offering some hot drinks at a time like that.
She claimed she would get her manager. I told her I had brought an enormous amount of business to the hotel, which I had. My company sponsored a 3-day conference in multiple halls and our guests booked multiple rooms.
So in the most cheeky way possible, she took our order -- and never brought the drinks. For 30 minutes, she and other waitstaff walked around refusing to serve us. Ridiculous, right? So they thought we did not belong, over local Malawians who ordered wine.
That is why I will never book a Sunbird again. Period. No apologies will change that. But let's get into the rest of my reasons why this is a 2/5.
There are many problems I choose to look over because this is Malawi. The missing light bulbs, leaking toilets, nonfunctional shower heads, and other quirks are to me an attempt to manage a 70 year old building with modest renovations. To be honest, for the price, there are better options, but the Sunbird chain's reputation brought me back to this whelming experience.
And it wasn't great.
My first night, the was a wedding reception. I didn't notice the noise as I normally work with noise cancelling headphones. But around midnight, when I went to sleep, it felt like a club was next door. I asked to move rooms and they agreed, apologizing for their event. I was shocked. that the reception was still happening. So at 1 AM, they moved me to another room -- but they overcorrected, moving me from the second floor facing the pool to the fourth floor corner facing the street. So a few hours later, I woke up to car horns and street noise. Finally, in the morning, they moved me across the hall to another room facing the car parking. This is not the first time I've had to move rooms at a Sunbird chain, so I feel that this is just part of the experience.
Another experience is breakfast serving at Sunbird, and it depends on your appetite. If you're looking for an international hotel breakfast experience, go somewhere else, because you'll rarely find pancakes. However, if you want something more culturally appropriate, this is the place to be. You can have ox tail, chicken gizzard, and liver with your Spanish omelet with cheese mixed in, and delicious local coffee.
If you've made it this far, I'll admit that eventually, the manager of the Vincent restaurant stepped in and served me and my colleague directly. He was likely never made aware of the mess his staff created and he apologized for the bad service.
But there's really no apology for this sort of service. The restaurant wasn't full. The waitstaff was prejudiced and they lied. Sunbird should apologize by cleaning up their staff.
