LOVED IT

The staff goes above & beyond to make you feel like royalty (something we're not used to haha). There are some snacks, coffee/tea in the lobby.
The traditional Ryoken rooms are HUGE and the traditional dinner/breakfast are amazing.
From Nikko, you will need to take another short train ride to Kinugawaonsen station, and the hotel will shuttle you from there (or it's a 12 minute walk).
The views are beautiful & you're a couple minutes walk to an AMAZING suspension bridge overlooking the gorge and mountains

Traditional Japanese Experience

During my holiday in Japan I wanted to stay in a traditional Japanese hotel and found it here . On arrival I was met outside the hotel by a staff member who welcomed me and brought me into the lobby and introduced me to the reception staff who booked me in and informed me about the public bath and coffee bar area and told me about the hotel . I was then taken up to my room/apartment and showed around the apartment. I was taken back with the size of my room which was clean and very comfortable and soon got ready to go down for dinner . On entering the dining room I was taken to my table and my meal was explained to me as this was a traditional Japanese meal which I really enjoyed. Breakfast was fantastic with an assortment of dishes . I can not thank the staff enough for making my stay a very enjoyable experience, especially the lady who looked after me in the dining room. I felt I got 100% customer care and my stay at a traditional Japanese hotel was made all the enjoyable. On leaving the hotel all the staff came to see me off and wished me all the best for the rest of my holiday. Thank you.

Amazing experience

The service was exceptional. The staff is very kind and friendly. My room was beautiful, spacious, very comfortable and clean. The open-air bathtub was awesome. The room didn’t smell cigarettes at all. We had a great time here. Everything was perfect. I highly recommend this hotel.

Misleading Description and Dirty, Do Not Go!

Tsuganoki is marketed as a quaint, tradition-oriented luxury ryokan in the Nikko region of Japan. The photos of the property are pristine - gorgeous flowing baths, picturesque views, a traditional wooden ryokan entrance, well-maintained facilities and beautiful rooms. However, when I first checked into the Tsuganoki property, I was shocked by how dated and disrepaired the property was. I was also shocked that the hotel was a high rise hotel rather than an intimate, traditional ryokan as marketed. As shown in the attached photos, the hotel lobby’s has black mold growing on the ceiling, the wallpaper is crumbling and the premises are in desperate need of a renovation. When I walked into my room, it was nothing like the photos on Booking.com through which I booked my stay. As you can see in the photos, the room’s appliances such, as the hair dryer, appear to be from the 1970’s, the balcony is dirty and looks nothing like the balconies shown on Booking.com, and the carpet, wallpaper and wood flooring are scuffed and dirty. What you cannot see from the photos is that this hotel used to allow smoking and the entire premises continue to reek of stale cigarette smoke. The room also has an overwhelming amount of tatami dust floating through the air which became problematic, as I quickly learned that I have a severe allergy to either the dust from the tatami straw or to dust mites, which I am told fester and congregate I’m poorly maintained tatami mats.
After a 45 minute call with Booking.com, I asked to either transfer or upgrade my room and the hotel reluctantly escorted me to the identical room next door which had the same cigarette smell, dated and scratched furnishings, and tatami dust that drew my concern. Given these issues, roughly 90 minutes after my 3:30 pm check in (which remains in the 3:00-6:00 pm check in window), I asked if I could leave the hotel and receive a full refund as there was a free cancellation policy advertised alongside my booking. The hotel declined. I initially spent the night sleeping in the carpeted area away from the tatami but the dust started to swell my eyes shut and I resorted to sleeping outdoors on the balcony. I checked out of the hotel one day early and the hotel declined to refund the unused night or apologize for the poor conditions of the ryokan.
In sum, the photos on the company’s website as well as online booking platforms are very misleading. The premises are dirty and smell of cigarette smoke. Do not go to this ryokan.
