Lovely hotel on Lake Orta
We had a lovely stay at Giardinetto with a group of friends. We had a lakeside superior room which was a good size and avoided any noise from the road. We swam in the lake although the pool looked very nice. The food in the restaurant in the evening was excellent, also there was a very good wine list and the location sitting on the terrace above the lake is so beautiful. Staff were very helpful and made us feel welcome.

As beautiful as I remembered
Re-visited this beautiful hotel, 34 years after spending the summer in Pettenasco. It remains as welcoming and stunning as I remembered and it’s still run by the wonderful Primatesta family who have recently celebrated their hotel’s 90th anniversary.
Stunning location, right on the lake - perfect for open water swimming (which I did every day). There have been extensive renovations and modernisations since my last visit and all have made the hotel even more perfect - especially the addition of the roof bar, which provides a perfect setting for a sunset aperitif.
Hotel staff, without exception, were all helpful, friendly and efficient and a credit to the family. The solarium area has been extended since my last visit and provided ample sun beds for guests with no issues finding plenty available, both overlooking the lake or around the pool.
Lake Orta is one of the smaller lakes, so the towns and villages are fairly quiet and not over populated by tourism, so you get the “real” Italian experience. Public transport is, as others have noted, a little thin on the ground - so would recommend hiring a car for stays longer than a few days so you can explore the wider area without paying the exorbitant cab prices.
Will definitely be returning again at some point - certainly not going to wait another 34 years that’s for sure!

Water’s edge hotel with amazing lake views
We have just returned from a 10 day break at the Giardinetto and were very happy with the hotel. Our room 145 overlooked the lake and the decking area in front of the swimming pool and was very quiet, avoiding the noise from the roof bar when weddings were taking place. The bed and storage were adequate but the bathroom we found to be on the small side especially the narrow shower unit. We did have an issue with the aircon but this was quickly resolved by the reception team.
We were staying on a half board basis and so were seated in the inside restaurant not on the terrace but we liked this better as we still had a front row table overlooking the lake and were able to stay dry one evening when a storm caused the people outside to retreat inside due to the rain coming through the roof! The food was excellent along with the wine which the waiters/ waitresses all had an excellent knowledge of. Breakfast was served in a separate restaurant and was also good with plenty of choice of both cold and hot items.
The decking area had plenty of sun loungers and parasols and we never had a problem finding one even when we visited later in the day. Both the lake and the swimming pool temperature were tolerable - 22 degrees for the lake and 24 degrees for the pool. If swimming in the lake beware though as it gets very deep quickly and you are not able to touch the bottom.
All the staff were amazing , from the reception to the restaurant staff and housekeeping all made you welcome and were very efficient in their jobs as well as appearing to be enjoying their work.
Although the hotel is in a fantastic location I would recommend having a car as public transport was virtually non existent when we visited although we were told that timetables were due to change on the 10th June just after we left. The hotel was served by 4 ferries a day, 2 to Orta Piazza and 2 to Omegna as well as an additional ferry on Thursday to Omegna market. You could also get ferries from Orta to the other smaller villages around the lake but unfortunately these had very little to see. We wanted to go to Lake Maggiore but this was only possible by taxi - €160 round trip!
Overall I would recommend the hotel but only for a few days if you didn’t have a car.

Most beautiful location for a lovely, warm hotel with ace rooftop bar.
We’ve stayed here for decades and love returning. Each year we are asked to spot the changes made since the last season and this year it was easy: a new width to the lake deck so there is now plenty of room for everyone wanting to bask and swim. Plus Nespresso machines in the rooms - replenished daily. For me this is HUGE!
The rooftop bar is still wonderful, with the best view of the lake and killer Aperol Spritz.
And it’s great for a range of generations: we had two 70 + and all the way down to two 2+ toddlers and it works for all of us. We were on half board and the dining-room team was super-flexible.
Also, when little Sophia had to visit the local urgent care centre in Omegna, (she’s fine, thanks) Francesca in reception helped us sort the day.
No wonder we go back for at least a week a year. So do many other people. Some become friends…

Our happy place
Our fourth stay in Hotel Giardinetto and,as ever, it was a great pleasure. The warmth of welcome, the attention of the staff, the personal interest and care of the family during our five night stay made it all the more special.
During our second evening a violent thunderstorm struck that necessitated diners to be relocated quickly from the lakeside dining area to the indoor dining restaurant. All the staff came to assist guests: they were most professional. Afterwards we learnt that storm damage had affected the kitchen’s cooling system making working conditions very difficult for the kitchen team; however they still produced excellent cuisine. Bravo!!
The memories of the food, the location on the lakeside, and the staff make it a holiday we savour and will repeat, Grazie!!
