Padi Ecolodge...Worth a return visit

A fabulous experience....I spent three nights at this wonderful place in January of this year,2026,and it was perfect....The location is unusual-in the middle of rice fields....A short path leads from the parking area to the lodge where the individual bungalows are built in the traditional style....Sleep quality was excellent-just the sound of birds and running water through the rice fields....The on-site restaurant was very good where I had breakfast....The staff were super friendly and helpful...I want to mention Aldo who handled check-in when I arrived from Parapat,Salsa at reception who organised a car and driver to take me to the airport in Padang on the morning I was leaving,Aki who took my luggage to the parking area when I was leaving and also Hudin and Fajer....A special mention of the driver who took me to Padang....This was Rio-an excellent driver, friendly and welcoming....Top marks to Padi Ecolodge....10 out of 10.

Highly recommended!

We had a double room with extra bed and yet enough space in the room. It was our best accommodation during our three week trip through Sumatra. Wonderful beds including white sheets and mosquito nets. The houses are really beautiful, very clean and only for this view from the balcony worth the journey to Bukittinggi. Jaka and his team are extremely friendly and Jaka likes to give tips for tours or tell about life there. A staff member was waiting for us ( late arrival ) at night and picked us up from the parking lot. We found that very caring. Thank you!
We also enjoyed eating at the lodge. Delicious!

Three nights at the PADI ECOLODGE

JAKA, who coordinates things at the ECOLODGE picked us up in Sawahlunto for the transfer to Bukittinggi.
The journey had several interesting stops: Giant waterwheels and men panning for gold, the impressive Istana just south of Batusangar and for the finale we watched the bull racing!
Our large room at the ECOLODGE was comfortable and spacious and overlooked rice padi fields. I think for their best room, a fridge would have been nice and maybe air conditioning although the two fans worked well but were quite noisy.
Food was good throughout our stay and the chef understood about GF requirements for my wife.
We’d booked two, day tours either JAKA which were both very interesting ways to learn about the highland areas we were in.
We’d highly recommend the PADI ECOLODGE and the way JAKA looked after us. JAKA dropped us off in Padang.
Terima khasi banyak!

Past glory

To be perfectly honest: Padi Ecolodge was disappointing, faded glory! It is beautifully situated that is certainly undeniable. However, it is near a busy road that you hear well during the day. Nearby two karaoke lovers. Fortunately in the night -except for the mosque- quiet. The name eco makes no sense because it says cheap (environmentally unfriendly) liquid soap, for example.
The staff are friendly but without any initiative, smoke very much and speak very little English. On arrival no drink, no explanation of the times of breakfast, everything was matt. The Dutch owner could provide more quality. The beautiful (deluxe) room seems nice at first sight but some things are clumsy or dirty. For example, the windows can only open at the bottom for fresh air but then within 15 minutes there is a beast inside, whether or not a monkey. The room we therefore found quite musty and also all the bed linen and towels did not smell fresh. Now, in countries with high humidity, this is always a problem. An extra towel to hang by the sink (which is in the room) would also be nice. There are sufficient sockets available. The kettle was unsafe because the lid was off so does not stop when the water boils.
Although it is close to the city, walking is not doable! The road leads to an upward hairpin and is styled, dusty and crowded with scooters between the cars. On the side of the bend the jungle begins and there are many cheeky monkeys. Fortunately, Grab is accessible.
You can have lunch or dinner, this quality is reasonable and westernized. The breakfast was good but the fruit is peeled by someone with perfume or aftershave hands or with a knife where onion and garlic has been used. Also be careful when eating: the monkeys are waiting everywhere to steal something. It is also because they are fed by both the tourists and the staff.
One thing was the biggest low for us: the room with mosquito net is described on the website as “quiet room for more privacy” but it is the room with the most noise because the kitchen is underneath. When the staff has nothing to do they enjoy themselves quite loud and smoking, the music is often very loud. I couldn't spend an afternoon reading a book on the balcony.
This may seem like whining now but we are trekking through North and West Sumatra for five weeks and Padi Ecolodge was the most expensive and least good or fine accommodation!
In short: location and buildings beautiful but Comfort and Welcoming and Food Safety could be better, especially for this price.
