Zostel's Central Team Fallback Behaviour
The following feedback highlights how Zostel failed to support me during my Spiti road trip in June 2023, while its counterpart provided excellent service. I had made bookings at both Zostel and Hosteller at various locations according to my road trip plan.
Inadequate email customer support: The individuals handling customer support via email seemed more like bots than human beings, as they only sent template responses. In contrast, Hosteller has excelled in this aspect and provided much better assistance.
Lack of a unique selling point: Zostel does not offer the option to transfer bookings from one property to another, even if customer is willing to pay the price differential between property listed price, while its counterpart does (making more revenue). It is perplexing why Zostel standardize the booking, experience and cancellation process if their response to switching properties is "each property is managed by different entities." This seems like a replica of the popular hotel aggregator model used by companies like OY* or MMT, on the other hand Hosteller has successfully resolved this issue, and bookings were transferred seamlessly, without any hassle.
Zostel's fallback behavior is indirectly promoting Hosteller and other homestay options, as they have a differentiator in their model instead of merely acting as an aggregator.
