Beautiful views over Hohnstein and a very good restaurant.

From the castle you have very great views of Hohnstein, the castle is also a youth hostel but really great to recommend is the restaurant. There are very delicious dishes, cakes, what the heart desires. We recommend the potato dumpling stuffed with pulled pork and the grater cakes with salmon and herbal curd. For the kids, there's noodles. The cakes aren't closed either.

great location & surroundings, rooms with room for improvement

I had a good stay at Hohnstein Castle over Easter and was warmly welcomed by the friendly staff. Breakfast was fine and offered a reasonable selection. The rooms were extremely simply furnished, but the sanitary facilities were clean and well maintained.
The location of the hostel is outstanding, with a very nice view and great access to many of the region's hiking trails. I enjoyed exploring the area and experiencing the beauty of the landscape.
However, I was disappointed with the cleanliness of the mattress and floor in my room. Despite the otherwise good conditions, this aspect was a clear negative point for me.
The reception is understandably not manned around the clock, but this meant that improvements could not be made during my time there. My later report went unanswered for a long time and unfortunately met with little understanding.
Overall, my stay was OK, but there is definitely room for improvement in terms of the cleanliness of the room facilities.
See attached picture for details on the cleanliness of the mattress.

Nice castle, but ants in the bed and bad food

There was an ant trail coming from outside directly through the bed, so we couldn't sleep. It was terrible. The staff ignored our complaint regarding this fact and also didn't apologize because of it or give an discount. Also the food was quite bad and for vegetarians it was not very nice.
The Castle itself is very nice and the rooms in general were clean.

Place for events with rooms

This is the old castle of Hohnstein, that has become a place where events like weddings take place, and also has a hotel and a hostel. The hostel rooms are in the tower, in 2 floors. Each floor contains 5 rooms. There are 3 bathrooms and 3 showers per floor. Soap is provided in the bathrooms. Showers don't have hangers so it can be quite uncomfortable to place clothes. I stayed in a room with 8 beds (3 bunk beds). Hot water is perfect. The floor had moquete, with a strange smell. No curtains in the windows nor mosquito nets. They provided sheets, big pillows (not comfortable) and blankets. All clean and tidy. In the room there was only one socket (for 8 people!). The breakfast was quite diversified with coffee, butter, mermalade, juice and ham, cheese, etc, everything for a perfect sandwich. I went in July, and no other place was open in the night for a meal, so you are also forced to pay for buffet in the restaurant. The meal costed 14 euros, and it was quite simple, with one variety of meat, dumplings, salads with mayonnaise. Drinks and dessert were not included in the price (there's an automatic dispenser that charges 2,5 per can of drink or water). The meal is served till 20hs. The check in is till 18hs, so if you are planning to arrive here after 18hs, you need to give advice. There's no reception during the night.
The day I arrived there was a wedding party in the dinning room, with fireworks, that lasted a long. There were also a group of 20 teenagers camping in the garden, shouting and watching a movie till 23.30hs in the night (a Friday). The people managing the hotel didn't seem to care about noises potentially disturbing tired guests that have been walking all day in the woods... It seems this works more like a club where the locals meet in the pub/restaurant to have beers and make social life. The beautiful scenery that inspired German paintors was ruined by the rock music that was coming from the boys camping settlement.

A room in a castle

I love castles.....so the opportunity to stay in one was always going to be high on my list. The rooms are basic but quite comfortable and we had lovely views over the town. The staff were friendly, the breakfast was good but the evening was only a buffet. The wifi was unreliable but nothing could take away my enthusiasm for a bed in the bowels of the castle. Great views and well located.

Very good location
