Christmas in Dusseldorf

For many people, Christmas is about staying home with family and following traditions. For me, Christmas has become something different—it has become my favourite time of year to travel.
We’re often told that Christmas should be spent in one particular way, but sometimes the greatest gift you can give yourself is a new experience. Rather than the inevitable festive tensions that can sometimes accompany family gatherings, I now choose to discover how other parts of the world celebrate this magical season.
When I was younger, I thought travelling meant sunshine, beaches and spending hours by the pool, carefully trying not to get sand in my sandwiches. As I’ve grown older, I’ve discovered a completely different kind of travel magic. I’ve fallen in love with winter destinations, twinkling lights, crisp mornings and the unmistakable atmosphere that only Christmas can bring.
As someone who absolutely adores Christmas markets, I knew I had to visit Düsseldorf. Having previously explored Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt, I was excited to discover another corner of Germany—a country that never fails to charm me. What I wasn’t prepared for was just how breathtaking Düsseldorf would be during the festive season.
From the moment I arrived at the Hilton Düsseldorf, I knew I had chosen the perfect place to experience Christmas. The hotel provided a warm, elegant retreat from the winter air, where every day felt relaxing and every evening felt festive.
One of the highlights was undoubtedly the Executive Lounge. Throughout the day there were complimentary soft drinks, biscuits and sweet treats to enjoy, making it the perfect place to pause between exploring the city. In the evenings, guests who arrived early could enjoy complimentary Prosecco, wines and spirits in a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. There was something incredibly cosy about returning after wandering through the Christmas markets and unwinding with a drink while reflecting on the day’s adventures.
The breakfast each morning was excellent, offering everything needed to prepare for another day of festive exploration, while the hotel’s gym was modern, spacious and well-equipped for those wanting to balance indulgence with a little exercise.
Then there were the Christmas markets.
Nothing could have prepared me for their scale. They seemed to stretch endlessly through the city, each with its own character, decorations, music and irresistible aromas. The scent of roasted chestnuts, mulled wine and freshly baked treats drifted through the crisp winter air, while thousands of sparkling lights transformed Düsseldorf into what felt like a real-life Christmas story. Every corner revealed another beautifully decorated chalet, handcrafted gifts, festive music and smiling faces. They were, without question, the most extensive Christmas markets I have ever visited, and it’s easy to understand why they are regarded as some of the finest in Europe.
One of our favourite ways to explore the city was by hopping on electric scooters. They were inexpensive, easy to use and a surprisingly fun way to travel between the different markets and attractions. It added another sense of adventure to an already unforgettable trip.
The true highlight, however, came on New Year’s Eve.
Standing in our room at the Hilton Düsseldorf, watching spectacular fireworks illuminate the night sky as midnight arrived, was nothing short of magical. Seeing one year end and another begin while overlooking the city lights created a memory that will stay with me forever. It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable festive escape and the most wonderful way to welcome 2026.
Hilton Düsseldorf wasn’t simply a hotel—it became part of the experience. It offered warmth, comfort and genuine hospitality throughout our stay and provided the perfect base from which to experience one of Europe’s greatest Christmas destinations.
I have no doubt that I’ll return. While Düsseldorf at Christmas completely captured my heart, I’m equally curious to see the city in summer and experience a different side of its beauty.
Until then, thank you to everyone at Hilton Düsseldorf for another exceptional stay. You helped make one Christmas feel truly magical.

...

I stayed there with my boyfriend, and the atmosphere was great. We received a room upgrade, and the staff were very friendly. Thank you, Hilton! We would definitely come back again

Loyalty is not rewarded.

The hotel already looks a bit dated from the outside. Although the rooms have been renovated and make a modern impression overall, you can still clearly see the age of the building in some places. For example, the film on the windows is already partially peeling off.
The way Hilton Honors Gold guests were treated was particularly disappointing for us. Although higher-category rooms were sufficiently available according to the booking status and we had already booked a relatively high room category, an upgrade was only offered upon explicit request. Access to the Executive Lounge was also denied to us despite our request.
In addition, there were long queues at the reception almost all day, which also does not meet the expected standard for a hotel of this category.
Overall, the stay was unfortunately disappointing. In our experience, other hotels in the Hilton group treat status guests much better and offer significantly better service. For this reason, we will not visit this hotel again in the future.

Good hotel but administration is a mess, double depreciation!

The Hotel itself is not so bad, little sober, boring environment but good beds and nice room. On arrival walked three times back to reception (from the 4th) because the key did not work and that with 35 degrees outside. No water bottles in the room. What's annoying is they're messing with reserved money. They reserve and charge immediately. Later they write off for the 2nd time. The value date is completely wrong. I've been emailing them all week with supporting documents but they don't refund anything, I don't think Hilton Düsseldorf's administration is in order. Fortunately for us it is 30 euros that has been double debited but it is also the principle and the failure or incorrect response and resolution of this complaint!

More conference room than luxury hotel.

Located near the airport, which would explain why it doesn’t feel like a luxury hotel, but more like a conference room with an option to stay the night. Very business vibe.
Bathrooms are very small, not comfortable to share with a second person.
Beds are quite hard and I woke up with a sore neck two nights in a row. The rooms were quiet but very dark.
Service is friendly, but they won’t go the extra mile. Even the live chat takes forever to get a response.
