Former prison turned into a pleasant design hotel

It is a somewhat understated but very cleverly designed hotel, with attractive and inviting common areas. The rooms themselves are rather basic. The location isn’t particularly central, but it’s in an interesting neighbourhood and close to the beautiful Lietzensee. Good breakfast.

Wilmina Hotel Berlin

The hotel had positives and negatives - thus the 3-star review.
Positive:
• The hotel is very cool and modern in its design. Our suite was small but beautiful.
• The attached restaurant (LOVIS) is incredible, and the affiliated bakery and cafe are outstanding.
• The complimentary breakfast is excellent.
Negative:
• The a/c never got cold in our suite - we inquired about it, but they never fixed it.
• Same-day laundry service was 2x pricing, so we opted for next-day service. We had to inquire 5x and finally received the laundry - damp! - at 9:30 pm, just before our next morning flight. (We are grateful that Wilmina did not charge us for laundry - after I asked them not to.)
• The neighborhood, Charlottenburg, is written up as posh, but the area for this hotel is very frumpy and dingy. There is nothing posh about it, unless you walk 15 minutes to K’damm Street.
We have stayed at lots of SLHs around the world and this is unlike the others.

What an absolutely perfect place for a ten-day stay in Berlin! Our room was lovely and clean and the staff was so very friendly and helpful We were here for Wagner’s Ring cycle at The Deutsche Oper so the location was ideal. The rooftop pool was beautiful and refreshing. Breakfasts were absolutely delicious and the baked goods from the Wilmina bakery next door were delicious. I highly recommend a stay at this jewel of a small hotel!

Amazing Hotel in Berlin

We spent 6 nights at the Wilmina Hotel in May 2026 and loved it. We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment which was quiet, had a kitchen, laundry, and was nicely furnished. Only downside was that it wasn’t air conditioned but did have 2 nice Dyson type fans (it was unusually hot in Berlin this past week). The staff were great, very responsive, but the highlight is the breakfast buffet and drink station. They have a filtered water on tap as well as an espresso machine that you can use anytime of the day but the buffet, while not large, had amazing, fresh local fruit and veggies, as well as the bread which comes from their own bakery. Finally, the neighborhood is great and a bit away from the crowded area near the Brandenburg Gate/Potsdamer Platz.

Our favorite place in Berlin.

This was now our fourth stay at our favorite hotel during Ascension. We always enjoy coming back, and when one thinks, "it can't get any better," one is always surprised that not only is the (expected) standard maintained, but it keeps getting better! Where is the sixth star? An interesting thought fits with this review, which came to us when an acquaintance asked: "You are in a former prison there."
Isn't it true that one can still feel the suffering that took place there, or is it not almost embedded in the walls of the building...?" My response to that: Everything takes place in our minds, and what is crucial for this building/this hotel is not its past, but what is being made of it in the present and the spirit that currently prevails there. And that is an exceedingly good spirit! It starts right at the greeting: The people there are always very friendly and helpful -- well, one would expect that at any reception, but here it feels a bit like "coming home"; it is familial and appreciative, and one is happy to arrive here. The walk through the beautiful, wild garden (formerly a prison yard) is a complete escape from the bustling Berlin/Charlottenburg; it is very quiet, even though one is in the middle of the city, and one can sleep at night without problems with the window open, while the birds chirp in the morning.
Breakfast: Always a highlight! Sustainable, exquisite, everything is fresh and of high quality; special requests are fulfilled (if possible), no mass processing, one is and remains a guest/human being.
Rooms: We had "standard" rooms, very nice with a view of the courtyard (formerly a drill ground...now trees and bushes); the Cosi is also very pretty (which we had before), it might be too small for some, but it is enough for us (we are also small). Upon "coming home": Fresh fruit is always available, coffee/tea, a piece of cake! The attached bakery "Wilmina-Brot" deserves a separate review with 5 stars: Great quality of baked goods, bread, and rolls!
CONCLUSION: We look forward to the congress and staying at Wilmina every year - keep it up! You really understood it! We love you!!!
