Not recommended: The charm of the USSR
To start with the positive, the Radisson's location near Alexanderplatz is good, and the atrium with the plants is nice. There was a bottle of water in the room. But that was it.
Otherwise, two stars is still generous, especially in relation to the price. The reception actually says it all. You wait at a respectful distance from the receptionist and are then summoned with a brusque wave of the hand as if at the unemployment office. The teenage specialist who arrived from the Stalinist brother country then rattles off a few instructions in a staccato style while lounging with her elbows on the reception desk. Unpleasant to look at, no sign of manners or a feeling of being welcome. I barely understood anything of the barracks-style instructions, even though I have spoken German as my native language for 55 years.
In addition, there is neither a porter, nor a concierge, nor a bellhop. Just a self-service luggage cart like at a Howard Johnson. Nothing that would point to 5 stars.
The hotel has aged a bit and seems unloving, cold, and more like a government building overall. A real East-experience, just saying. The rooms are small and seem strangely laid out, the mattress is hard as a rock, and you look in vain for an extra pillow. Everything is very cold and impersonal, and why the two decorative pictures in the room were not hung on the wall, but placed loosely on a shelf, only the interior designer (if one exists) must understand. And the carpet needs to be replaced or cleaned. A few rooms down (we are on the 5th floor) the carpet at the door is adorned with an attractive brown streak that leaves the visitor wondering whether it is smeared dog feces or just trampled food scraps. But the fact that the 5th The fact that the floor had a strong smell of feces upon our arrival (and has had ever since) leaves me with little hope. Why no one cares about the brown streaks and the smell in an (alleged) 5-star hotel is a mystery to me.
So, we are staying one more night here, then luckily we are going somewhere else. I had expected more for a honeymoon in Berlin, especially since the hotel is not exactly cheap.
As I said, two stars is generous; we are definitely not coming back. But I don't think that will bother the management here, as "pride of ownership" or Berlin hospitality seem to be nonexistent here anyway.
Addendum: We did eventually meet one (!) friendly hotel employee in front of the elevator. The young gentleman wished us a pleasant evening with a dynamic stride and a broad smile. Normally, something like that would hardly be noticed, but at the Radisson it is, and that really says it all.
