It was a perfect place. We got a message from the hotel, that our room would be noisy. When we arrived they gave us a better room for free which was less noisy. The hotel was totally renovated but in a chinese way, and every day there were new bottles of water. We highly recommend this hotel and the friendly staff

This is a difficult review to write. There’s a lot I like about Joke Inn - it’s in a cool location, the room was nice,and the staff are friendly. And I should mention - I don’t have experience with the inner, courtyard facing rooms - this is just about street-facing rooms….
I saw the reviews talking about noise and figured it was just normal street noise - which as a New Yorker I’m fine with. But what we experienced was FAR beyond regular street noise. We had a room facing the street (and the Xi’an city wall) and the issue is that there are two live music venues on the ground floor that compete by blasting the music - which bounces off the city wall into the room. The music goes until 2am every night (not just weekends). The earplugs they give you don’t even begin to be enough. After getting just 4 hours of sleep the first night I managed the next 3 nights by taking a sleeping pill and wearing huge uncomfortable noise canceling headphones. That should never be necessary in a hotel.
So the bottom line in my opinion is the owners need to figure out if they’re in the entertainment business or the hotel business because the two don’t mix - at least not for the street-facing rooms.

However, we are truly sorry and deeply concerned to hear about your experience with the noise from the live music venues. Please accept our heartfelt apologies for the significant distress and sleepless nights this caused during your stay. You are absolutely right – relying on sleeping pills and noise-canceling headphones is not the experience we want any of our guests to have. We failed you in this regard, and for that, we are very sorry.
Your review has served as a critical wake-up call for our management team. We are actively addressing this serious issue. While we cannot control the venues themselves, we are immediately taking the following steps to mitigate the impact on our street-facing rooms:
Enhanced Guest Communication: We will now explicitly and prominently state on our booking channels the potential for significant nighttime noise in street-facing rooms until 2 AM, so that all guests, especially light sleepers, can make a fully informed decision.
Upgraded Amenities: We are sourcing higher-quality earplugs and will make them readily available,
Your point about choosing between the "entertainment business" and the "hotel business" is well-taken. Our primary commitment is, and always will be, to providing a restful and comfortable stay. We are determined to find solutions that allow us to uphold that commitment.
We understand if you are hesitant to return, but we would be grateful for the opportunity to provide you with a peaceful stay in one of our quieter inner courtyard rooms in the future, should your travels bring you back to Xi'an.

2 of us in this room for 3 is awesome! Very spacious and could easily accommodate 3 adults.
We were there in first week of November. As it was low peak season they upgraded us to this 3 person room. It even has a ladder up to a small “balcony” where one could sit to look out to the decorated rooftops.
Location is really good once you figured out how to navigate. It’s right next to 书院门. There isn’t any Metro station “at the doorstep” but close enough.
Coffee that they serve is also very good.
Only downside I would say is the drainage flow in the shower room. Whenever one showers, the area will be flooded. So will need to give them for the water to drain before the next person goes into the shower.

Nice place with cafe on 1st floor. Excellent view on the rooftop 😍. Nice staff. Here is the place that I will come again.
