A great hostel right on the coast
Black Mamba is a quality place to stay. It's basically a hostel with some dorm rooms and some private rooms and a couple of communal areas as well as guest kitchen.
The whole place is clean and comfortable. Breakfast is very good, and although not included in the price, is only an additional €6 per person. Packed lunches and dinner are also available at a reasonable cost. Your final bill can be paid in CVE or € cash, or by card (2.5% surcharge).
The owner is really nice. She has lots of information about the walks on Santo Antao and how to get around. English, Italian and Portuguese is spoken.
The location is excellent if you want to complete the Cova Crater to Paul walk as you can finish at the guesthouse. Otherwise it's easy to take a collectivo from outside the guest house to Ribeira Grande and onwards if you want to do the coastal walk to Ponta do Sol or to other areas.
Approximate costs for two people are - Porto Novo to Black Mamba (CVE 700), Black Mamba to Ribeira Grande (CVE 200), Black Mamba to Cova Crater (CVE 2000), Ribeira Grande to Cruzinha (CVE 1000).
Be aware, once the sun goes down, there's no collectivos. The vans will all change to taxis and it costs about CVE 1000 for a couple to travel from Ribeira Grande to Paul. So plan accordingly.

Many years ago
We stayed at Black Mamba during a trip in 2015. We always meant to leave a review but somehow never did. Tonight, we came across an old receipt, which lead as to review it now. Our stay at Black Mamba was memorable. We ate great pizza, and spent the best night of our trip in the little cosy room under the roof after chatting with the very nice lady which owned the place. We highly recommend the place!

Amazing food, amazing staff, amazing place
This accommodation is just fantastic! The staff is extremely friendly and very helpful. I could get vegan food here. It was easy to have this place as a base and explore the area. I can absolutely recommend it!

A great stay. I recommend
We really enjoyed our stay. We had a very cool room painted in beautiful colors with many details. We had ocean view from the bed. There is also hot water to take a bath in. The room was clean and they also have laundry service.
The food is very good and there was a lot to choose from. The breakfast is included and very good. There is a nice bar and terrasse with wifi.
The host is really friendly and helpful and she arranged transportation of our bags to the next hostel. We forgot our visa card and she sent it with a car to us :) :) :)

Absolutly recommanded
I really enjoyed my stay at black mamba. It is easy to reach from the port and everyone knows it. It is a good starting point to do several hikes. The owner has a map and she can explain you where to go. From villa das bombas you can discover the whole east side of the island.
The first night I shared a room with a friend. I loved the big suite, I felt like a princess. After my friend left, I moved to the cheapest room. I think a bit expensive for what you get (just a bed and a shared bathroom). However that was all I needed. Be aware, this room is only reachable by a ladder and is a bit noisy from the sounds of the restaurant. However, after hiking a whole day you are so tired you will sleep directly. Everything is really clean. There is a nice rooftop with the sea view. The sea is just on the other side of the road. Breakfast is lovely and you are not hungry for hours... downstairs is a restaurant with good food.
The only small minus point is that the owner seems to be really busy and has not always time for you. Once we wanted to leave early for hiking but we had to wait for our breakfast, although we told her te evening before. Also at the restaurant we had to wait very long. Luckily this both happend once, the other days she was very quick.
Ps: the prices are exclusive the tourist tax (220 a night).
