A Jewel in The Port
We stayed through the week and had no trouble getting into any of the restaurants or other businesses. However, I would expect things to be much busier on weekends and in the summer. Also, some businesses are not open Monday and Tuesday. We ate both nights at the Portside Social which is directly below the rooms. The menu and staff are top notch. Balzacs is across the street for a morning sweet to go with the in room expresso coffee. The Lock Street Brewery was closed during our stay but looked inviting.
There are plenty of things to do in the area. You can walk to the end of the long pier, walk on the beach or explore the old locks where the original Welland canal terminated. Remains of old Lock 1 are behind the abandoned textile building.
There are many other walking and biking trails in the area. One thing we did which we found worthwhile was drive to Lock 3 on the Welland Canal where there is an interesting museum and a viewing platform to watch the large vessels go through the lock.
And for any wine lover, there are lots of wineries to choose from. One which we enjoyed for tasting and lunch was Caroline just outside Virgil, but get the current Wine Country Travel Guide and pick your own. Another free option is to tour the new gardens at the Pillar and Post in NOTL.
In summary, I would highly recommend The Juniper but go before things get too busy in Port Dalhousie. It is a great base to see the Niagara area and Adiana is an amazing owner/operator.
