Wonderful stay
We spent the week at Merrill house and it lived up to all my expectations. I have wanted to go here since I was a child, driving by on our way to Sandbanks.
I still remember the old "Rolls" sitting out front.
We loved everything about our stay from the breakfast to our room and all of the common areas. Photos included. The staff really made our stay special and we look forward to going back.

Grand old dame disappoints
We stayed at Merrill House for three nights in mid-August. We had booked the Parisian Room with two beds. Upon booking in February of 2026, we were encouraged to pay the full amount immediately, which we did.
We arrived at the appointed time only to find that we had been “upgraded” to a “suite”. We had not been advised of this change in our booking at any time between February and August, si we were understandably surprised. The “suite” was on the first floor with its own entrance, which was great. It consisted of two room, the first of which was the living area which was the width of an 84 inch couch, contained a small bistro table and two chairs a small bar fridge with a coffee maker on top, and a bar cart beside that. Besides that was a bedroom with a queen bed aa well as a full bathroom of course.
It all looked okay at first glance, but it meant that one of us would have to sleep on the couch and sofa beds being what they are, we were none too pleased. This was borne out my our experience. It was utterly disappointing as the sofa was dirty, uncomfortable and tattered. Moreover, when fully extended, it took up most of the room, which inevitably made it look like a college dorm room with all of our belongings tucked in where there were no sofa pillows!
We were happy with the location of course and the house itself is a grand old dame from times past. The grounds are lovely and the hotel itself offered a quiet atmosphere. However, given our expectations and the lack of communication about the change in rooms, we were dismayed by the lack of acknowledgement of the mistake or the absence of any kind of reparation. I would not recommend this place for the simple lack of client care. Very unfortunate.

I reserved The Parisian Room on February 3rd for a 3-night stay from August 13 to 16 2026.
Despite what Merrill House’s website suggests, I received an email from the owner a day or two later advising me to immediately pay in full to secure my reservations in The Parisian Room as I would otherwise incur a 10% increase upon arrival. I have travelled a lot and this raised a red flag.
I was informed upon arrival that The Parisian Room was not available and that we’d been upgraded (their word, not mine) to a room with one bed and a sofa bed. We strongly objected and were promised a discount. I’m not holding my breath.
We learned from guests that arrived the following day that they occupy the Parisian Room. It was never offered to us.
My fellow traveler came home with a sore back as the sofa bed’s mattress does not cushion the traverse bars of the sofa bed. Incidentally, it is both torn and stained.
A $30 gratuity was added to my credit card despite having paid tips in cash. My objection fell on deaf ears.
From service to décor, the experience is very underwhelming.

Super friendly staff, fun and eclectic decor, great barrel sauna.
Only less than great thing was the comfiness of the sofa bed, but everything else about the room was amazing, including the welcome brownies and sparkling water.

Fantastic atmosphere and enjoyable stay
What a beautiful hotel. The room we had The Gothic was comfortable, clean and so pretty. The common rooms in the hotel were fun and sometimes a little quirky. The staff, Maya was friendly approachable and really made our check in and check out a great experience.
I recommend booking directly with Merrill House so the stellar breakfast comes with your room, but if you didn’t it is well worth it to pay for the breakfast on the side.
I would whole heartedly recommend and would love to come back.
