Burgled!
About a week before my intended stay, I received a message via Booking. I was to contact the owner via WhatsApp, and pay either a third or the full amount in advance to secure my reservation. I replied when I was already in Douala, staying at a different apartment. I confirmed my reservation, and would pay in cash on arrival at the apartment.
Residence Mcm has a middle-of-nowhere location in Nkongmondo, so you definitely need to arrange transport in advance. It's actually on Rue 1110, but you won't find this dirt road on Google maps. It's very close to Carrefour Eto'o Fils, with a decaying statue of legendary football player Samuel Eto'o.
The apartments are in a private residence, with a security guard. My apartment looked splendid, just like in the pictures. I had a living room with a full set of sofas and a dining table, a separate bedroom, a kitchen and a bathroom. Both the living room and bedroom were air-conditioned. So much for the good news. The first piece of bad news is that there was no hot water! It's hard to believe that such a grand apartment doesn't offer this most basic amenity, but that's how it is.
The promised free WiFi didn't materialize either. After going without Internet the first day, I was given a local SIM card the next morning. Luckily, my phone supports 2 SIM cards. The vendor helped me set up the SIM card, but I had to pay for the phone credit. Daily room cleaning is not included. Even though my reservation was for 2 people, I was only supplied 1 towel which was never changed during my 4 day stay.
As I was driving home in a taxi on my final night, the driver warned me I was staying in a very dangerous neighborhood. Motorcycle gangs scour the streets, looking to rob white people in a taxi. When I got home, the security guard was nowhere to be seen, so I opened the outside gate myself. Once inside the apartment, I soon noticed my luggage was open. I hurried to check my personal portable travel safe, finding it had been forced open. I knew exactly how much money was in there. Thieves had gotten away with the equivalent of 1600 USD in 4 different currencies!
When I notified the owner & the apartment manager of the theft, they blamed it on the 2 girls who'd visited my apartment in the afternoon earlier that day. How ridiculous! We're not talking about stealing a few bills from an unattended wallet. We're talking about breaking the lock of a safe, which requires specialized tools & skills. To suggest the girls were able to pull of this stunt while I was right there in the room with them is utterly laughable. Besides, I took money from the safe after the girls left, and the lock wasn't broken. I also went out with the same 2 girls at night. They picked me up in a taxi, without entering the apartment. While we were partying, I got robbed. I'm 100% convinced the robbery was carried out by professional thieves, probably with insider help.
Don't get fooled by the pretty pictures. There's no hot water. The apartment is in a very dangerous neighborhood, and you're liable to get burgled. Don't even consider staying there!
