Koro island camp

Beautiful location and very friendly staff, the food was well made. The beds and outside toilet/shower were very clean. Unique location, amazing view over the river. The only downside was the fact that there was no wi-fi available on the river camp, BUT after every gamedrive the staff drove us to the river camp where we could use the wi-fi. Also the staff over there was very friendly and helpful.
PS, if you self-drive to the camp, make sure you have a 4x4, not a compact suv. The roads before and after Platjan border crossing are all dirtroads. It is doable with a compact suv, but we definitly do NOT recommend it. We could only drive around 15-20 kp/h so the drive took us way longer than expected.

Dear Alex, thank you so much for your kind words. We are pleased to say that after this weekend, wifi is being installed as Starlink became available in Botswana....The dirt road from the border is indeed not in a good condition as it is towards the end of the dry season; it was wise not to drive too fast, luckily the roads department will start working on it soon with the rains on their way! Thank you again and hopefully we will meet again!

The best safari camp we have ever stayed in

Stayed at the Koro Island Camp in Southern Botswana for 3 nights in July as part of a 12 day Limpopo Explorer Safari booked with Alexandra’s Africa. The camp is in the unfenced Central Tuli reserve in an absolutely stunning location and everything about it we loved. Definitely the best safari camp we’ve ever stayed in and we’ve stayed in a few. The camp has only 4 large tents on an island in the middle of the Limpopo River which can only be reached by a rope bridge over the river. Each room has a terrace overlooking the river and views across to the river bank opposite. It has a lounge/dining room, terrace for breakfast, small plunge pool and boma which is set down by the river all of which are lit by kerosene lamps as there are no electric lights on the island which makes it feel like a real `Out of Africa’ experience especially when you see the stunning sunrises and sunsets from the camp – absolutely stunning. There were only four of us (two couples) and the owner of the safari company on the island along with the staff which outnumbered us so made it feel like our own private island. Even though the tents have no electric lighting there are solar powered sockets in the room to charge phones and cameras. They also have open air bathrooms with a shower and bath so could watch the stars while showering or during the day we could watch the animals coming down to the opposite river bank through the window. We were in the tent furthest from the dining room which didn’t worry us as were given a torch to get to and from the room at night and an air horn should there be an emergency at night. We loved listening to the sound of the animals at night while lying in bed including lions roaring, hyenas calling and elephants trumpeting. One morning we woke up to find genet tracks leading up to and around our tent. When we mentioned it to the staff they said that he frequently visited the island at night once guests had gone to bed as he enjoyed the heat from the boma fire and scavenged around the dining room for any titbits guests might have dropped. We went out on a bush walk on our first morning with our ranger Zac and guide Mandla. We also did two game drives each day including a drive to a hide during one of the day. Due to the issue of Covid we were the only ones staying in the area so never saw another jeep the whole time we were there which was great for us as felt like we had the whole reserve to ourselves. Saw lots of wildlife including impala, wildebeest, giraffes, zebras, a dassie, crocodiles, steenbok and lots of elephants some of which came onto the island while we were there but we never felt in danger. At one of the hides we watched a whole family of banded mongooses arrive at the waterhole. During a night drive we also saw hyenas, a porcupine, bush babies, bush rabbits, owls and jackals. We even caught a glimpse of a honey badger but the absolute highlight of the game drive was when a leopard cub and his/her Mum ran across the track right in front of our jeep. We had seen leopards before in South Africa but never a cub so definitely the highlight of our holiday. The other highlight was the final sundowner where the camp staff had set up chairs on top of a hill by a large baobab tree so we were able to watch the sunset looking out over the reserve towards Zimbabwe. A fantastic end to a wonderful stay. All helped by the brilliant staff including the manager Sammi, cook Margaret, our brilliant ranger Zac and guide Mandla who were so knowledgeable and all the other staff who made us feel so welcome and an absolute asset to the camp. Credit also to Margaret, and the other staff who helped (sorry I didn’t get their names), for all the wonderful food we had. Would we go back - most definitely and are planning a longer stay next time.

Excellent service and most amazing location

The service was of an extremely high quality. The team went the extra mile to ensure our comfort. The location and set up of the lodge is truly magnificent. Beautiful sunrise and sunsets create everlasting memories to cherish
The guides were the best. We saw leopard cubs, a leopard on a kill and a pride of lions. Solomon and KB displayed a high level of respect for the bush. KB is a gem:)))))) Will be back again with guests soon. Highly recommended

Magic.

The friendly staff went the extra mile to ensure a comfortable stay and never ceased to put a smile on our faces. An urban disconnect - limited cell and WiFi connection offered the ideal place for our family to bond. The field guides in my opinion are world class. Goodluck finding a better field guide duo elsewhere! Thank you for an unforgettable getaway, Koro!
