Rössle in Au, a hotel of a class: Service top, just beautiful and relaxing
What should I write this year, since I wrote everything last year. Since we missed it, we were “repeat offenders” this year because you really can’t find anything like this anymore: a manageable family-run hotel with phenomenal trimmings.
We had again the double room “Springinsfeld” this time in the 2nd floor. Stock. It simply has a smart floor plan solution. For those who haven't already read along last year: Shower and toilet cubicles are located “in the room”, but again not from the feeling, because the cabinet and the partition of the washbasin divide the room without being disturbing. Finally a washbasin with enough space for all the necessary utensils. The seating area with couch, bench and table, decorated with trendy pillows is so “hyggelig”.
Beds for a restful sleep (to the street side at night the windows close rather than there is some traffic, as also state bus stop – thanks to BregenzerwaldCard for free - around the corner, had not used our car during the week!). We value cleanliness and were not disappointed once again.
Half board was the highlight again. Private table in the time-honored parlours (great people just pull their heads in). The breakfast buffet is a dream, selection again huge and particularly tasty, every morning also changing theme area as a treat (Alpine, Italian, etc.). The four-course evening menu, prepares the morning to select the “torment” (meat, fish, or rather vegetarian?). The kitchen team showed again the week about his skill and the friendly, attentive service no less. You choose from the salad buffet with 15 variations, then you get the very finest soup again. Finally, a dessert that surprises every time (only the ingredients are mentioned in the morning, then in the evening simply a piece of glory is conjured from it)
The team and the two sisters Simma live hospitality, are extraordinarily friendly, in short just warm. You can also literally feel the good togetherness. I wrote last year that we would be back and “Tata” here we were already back in Au in the Bregenzerwald.

Enjoyment at its finest
In this evaluation, we wondered where to start. Well, let's start with the beginning - not original, but first impressions matter.
Inquiry and booking
Our request was not only answered quickly, but also very charming and binding. You had the impression from the beginning that the right words were chosen here and there was a certain warmth and authenticity in the words.
The Arrival
Even though we have never been to the Rössle before, you had the impression that they knew who wanted to check in there. Here, you don't ask for a credit card as a backup directly or are inundated with forms. We were able to fill out these digitally in advance.
The staff
At the risk of repeating ourselves, but warmth, kindness, charm and commitment were given to everyone/everyone from the start. You really feel like a guest coming home. This is not played or trained, but it comes from within.
The kitchen / The food
There is no kitchen here, but a food art workshop. Yes, on the one hand vegetables, fish, meat etc. go in, but out comes true works of taste. Everything is finely coordinated and dessert is always a firework of good taste and creativity.
In addition, the food is served on very appealing dishes.
We were also highly satisfied with our table, because here too they paid attention to who fits better in one room or the other.
The rooms
Someone here was working with brains. In a given space, the space was optimally used and everything coordinated down to the smallest detail. The floor coverings, the sanitary facilities are right here, and the carpenters have done an excellent job with great individuality.
Overall, the house clearly notices that thought has been given to all places, whether in the spa area, the doors and handles to the ski and hiking room. It is a pleasure to discover this.
The criticism
Hardly and if so, it is minor personal sensitivities such as the softness of the mattresses.

The perfect place for relaxing holidays. Also highly recommended for short trips
Wonderful breakfast, very fine food, best cakes in the afternoon, very warm service, beautiful, very clean rooms, we can just rave.
We would also particularly recommend a private bike course (bike school just opposite). Professional Jochen gives wonderful tips that we can now implement well in everyday life.
We would also like to highlight the warmth of the Simma family. So you wish for perfect hosts.

Feel good, enjoy, relax – at the Simma family in Au, this still works perfectly!
This year we were again a guest of the Simma family at the Hotel Rössle. For a week we enjoyed the wonderful surroundings of the Bregenzerwald in the pre- and low season in May. The fact that not all mountain railways were in daily operation at the early stage was not too bad, as a few nice hikes could be completed in the valley.
We had booked the double room “Gamsglück”, which we lived in together with our then still two-year-old daughter in 3-occupancy. Thanks to the low-priced weekly package (7 nights for the price of 6), we booked the extremely hospitable calculated HP offer, which included a very varied breakfast buffet and a 4-course menu in the evening, right in. A real feel-good half-board where you had three main courses to choose from in the evening.
I already reported extensively about the staff always caring for their guests with a smile during my last year's review. This has not changed in 2024. Satisfaction of guests remains the top priority of the Simma family and their employees.
The well-equipped games room was also frequently visited by our little one. Good thing it was not too far from the restaurant or breakfast room. After dinner, our little daughter was able to pass the time and enjoy the rustic and cosy atmosphere of the time-honoured inns in familiar togetherness.
In addition to the very well-kept, sociable rooms on the ground floor, the nicely landscaped wellness area one floor down and the quality furnished, very clean rooms – the beds were a dream! – it was once again the kitchen that delivered every evening at a very high level. What the talented chef Robin Werner and his crew served up was, as in the previous year, simply sensational.
The culinary journey began on arrival night with juicy roasted turbot on saubeans, lardo and parsley puree and ended a week later with a bold Zurich scramble accompanied by a top-class homemade rösti and a few sugar pods.
The kitchen team gave us a week of component-rich arranged highlights for the palate and eye. Every evening we were first allowed to help ourselves to the rich salad buffet before we had a delicious soup (semolina dumpling, asparagus cream, flail, spinach and celery cream as well as an excellent tomato essence) which really put on the (soup) spoons.
For the following main course we had already decided in the morning at breakfast. Here we were always allowed to choose between a meat, fish or veggie dish. Sometimes it wasn't that easy. In addition to extraordinary meat courses, such as the venison veal back on celery puree, pickled berries from the rowan, hazelnut crumble and fresh chanterelles, very tempting fish plates, such as the perfectly fried trout fillet on asparagus on a nut butter-finish Sig-Beurre-Blanc, were also served.
And whether all this would not be enough, the sympathetic patissière Anna sweetened the evening with texturally and tastefully exciting desserts. With her small, contrasting combined artworks, she provided the appropriate closing points in sweet, sour, cold, warm, crispy or creamy. So dessert was always good for a surprise, because only the essential components were noted in the menu card in a keyword-like manner. It’s already blatant what this “fine baker” conjured up on the colour-coordinated ceramics from simple ingredients such as rhubarb, raspberry and yogurt.
As a family we value good food, tastefully furnished rooms and a child-friendly environment, the Hotel Rössle in Au is and remains our first choice in the Bregenzerwald.
The lovable Simma family of operators and their courteous employees – whether at the reception, in the kitchen, in the service or at the bar – do a very excellent job. I can highly recommend your house, which is run with passion and commitment, to every relaxation-seeking fine palate.
By the way, we came back to Au for a few days a few months later for family reasons. Where we lived there, I'm sure you can think after this report...
