A family run and family friendly hotel with great views, warm and friendly staff and excellent food.
The food was excellent! So much choice at breakfast and all top quality, the chef was so friendly and made amazing fresh waffles, pancakes and egg dishes every morning. Dinner was delicious, varied and the service was great. The children were welcome to have starters from the main buffet in the evenings, and the child friendly main course was always tasty and there was enough choice (my daughters chose the tomato pasta most nights because they thought it was delicious, but the schnitzel and chicken nuggets were also excellent and home made).
The pools and saunas were always clean, we went swimming every day! The view from the outside pool is absolutely spectacular! It was a nice touch that the hotel provide you with a swimming bag to carry your towels down in (the also provide a hotel branded back pack that you can use which was a nice touch!). Also worth noting that the local public pool across the road is excellent if you are looking for water slides, lazy river etc for the kids.
We didn’t hire a car and for the amount of time we were there we got by ok without one. I must say that the area wasn’t as well connected as we had thought (the free Salzburgerland shuttle never worked for us for example!), but with a couple of taxi rides where necessary we got by perfectly well using our free bus and train passes, here is what we did:
2 days at the Asitz doing the various walks and sensory experiences on offer. It’s a really lovely mountain with lots to do!!
Took the train to Zell am Zee where we rented bikes and cycled around the lake. Then we rented a very slow electric boat which was also a lot of fun.
Took a taxi to the Biberg mountain where we took the chairlift up and walked to a hut about 45 mins away with gorgeous views! Then did the mountain toboggan back down - really good fun. Could have done this by bus or train but it involved quite a long walk from Saalfelden and it was pretty hot for the kids.
Walked up to the local hut for a drink. Kids played with and groomed the goats. It was a lovely place!
Spent a day and an afternoon at the local pool which is about 3 mins walk from the hotel.
Bus to Mari Alm (beautiful!) and took the cable car up the Natrun. Had a dip in the small lake and slid back down the mountain on multiple slides….lots of fun. Got a taxi back to avoid waiting for the hourly bus which we had just missed.
If you want to go further afield you need a car although you can get to Salzburg and a few other towns quite easily!
A family run and family friendly hotel with great views, warm and friendly staff and excellent food. We would love to return. Thank you for your hospitality and for a lovely stay in beautiful Leogang!

It makes us very happy to hear that you and your family felt so welcome at Hotel Der Löwe and enjoyed your holiday in Leogang.
It is lovely to hear that our team, from reception to the kitchen and restaurant, helped make your stay special. Very different from what we expected
Having subsequently returned to a different hotel in a different town for the third year running, the contrast was particularly noticeable. Both hotels present themselves as high-quality family hotels in a similar area, but for us, they couldn't have been more different in terms of atmosphere, hospitality and overall experience.
One of the first things that struck us was the lack of a proper welcome or any useful information from reception. On arrival, we were simply given our room key and told which floor to go to. There was no introduction to the hotel or the local area, no information about things to do, facilities, activities or anything else we might need to know etc.
We subsequently asked several members of the reception team for help with various things / activities, but unfortunately they often seemed unsure themselves and weren't able to provide much useful information. On one occasion, we were simply handed a leaflet and told to "look it up online". The whole reason we were asking at reception was because we needed some help and local knowledge.
It's worth saying that Petr, the driver who collected us from the station, was actually fantastic. He was friendly, welcoming and helpful, and gave us a really positive first impression of the hotel. Unfortunately, that level of warmth and hospitality wasn't reflected elsewhere during our stay.
The biggest disappointment was the overall atmosphere. We found the staff to be generally cold and unfriendly, with some interactions feeling quite abrasive. The male owner was sitting in reception on his mobile phone rather than greeting arriving guests, and when we raised our concerns with the female owner, we were surprised by the lack of any real attempt to understand or improve the situation. Her response was essentially, "Okay, so you leave today."
As a family hotel, we found the experience quite disappointing. The hotel certainly didn't feel particularly geared towards families during our stay. At mealtimes, there was a noticeable feeling that children were more of an inconvenience than something the hotel was welcoming. Even normal family noise seemed to be met with some rather solemn looks from other guests.
The food was another let-down. The children weren't able to choose from the main menu and were instead offered a very limited choice of schnitzel, pasta or chips. The chips in particular appeared to have been sitting in the buffet and were barely warm. Breakfast was also disappointing, with the bread and pastries seeming more like supermarket or shop-bought products than the fresh, high-quality breakfast we'd expected from a hotel of this standard.
Our room was advertised as having a mountain view, but unfortunately the view was largely broken up by a cemetery. Being right next to a busy main road was also an issue, particularly as there is no air conditioning or fan, meaning we had to keep the windows open at night and could hear the traffic.
We were also surprised to be charged €4 for tap water.
To be fair, after we decided to leave early, the hotel did reduce the charge from the original 80% of the total to 50% of the total, which we appreciated. However, that still meant paying over £2k for just two nights, which made the overall experience particularly difficult to justify.
It's a shame, because we were really looking forward to staying here. Unfortunately, the hotel we experienced was very different from the one portrayed on social media, and compared with our experience in Zell am See, we wouldn't return and wouldn't recommend Hotel Der Löwe to families looking for a genuinely warm and family-friendly hotel.

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback with us. We are genuinely sorry that your stay did not meet the expectations you had when choosing our hotel.
It is particularly disappointing for us to read that you experienced our team as cold or unwelcoming. Warm, personal hospitality is something that is very important to us, especially when welcoming families.
That is also why your feedback is particularly difficult for us to read. We are very fortunate to have many guests who return to us year after year and who describe the atmosphere at the Löwe as warm, personal and welcoming. We also receive many reviews from families who feel very comfortable here. We do not mention this to question your experience – quite the opposite. It makes us especially sorry that we were unable to create that same feeling for you and your family.
We are therefore taking your comments seriously and will discuss them with our team.
We are especially pleased to hear that Petr gave you a positive first impression. He is a valued member of our team, and we very much appreciate you highlighting his kindness and helpfulness.
There are also some points in your review that we would like to clarify. Our family concept is very important to us, and children are very welcome at Der Löwe. We do offer a children's menu, and our breakfast buffet includes a variety of regional and freshly prepared products. We are sorry if this was not how you experienced our offer during your short stay.
Regarding the room, the mountain view and the location of the hotel are clearly shown in our room descriptions and photographs. Our hotel is centrally located in Leogang, which means that road traffic can be heard from some rooms, particularly when windows are open. We understand that this can be a concern, especially in warm weather.
We also regret that you did not feel sufficiently supported by our reception team when looking for activities and local information. This is exactly where we want our team to be able to offer personal recommendations rather than simply referring guests to online information.
Most of all, we are sorry that the atmosphere you experienced was so different from what you had hoped for. We know that a hotel stay is about much more than a room and facilities – it is about feeling welcome and comfortable. In your case, we clearly did not succeed in creating that feeling.
We respect your decision to leave early and were pleased that we could at least meet you halfway regarding the cancellation costs. Nevertheless, we are sorry that your experience ultimately led to such a disappointing impression of our hotel.
Thank you again for your honest words. We will take them seriously, even where our perception of individual points may differ, because feedback such as yours gives us the opportunity to look critically at ourselves.
We wish you and your family all the very best for your future travels.
Best regards,
Familie Madreiter & the Löwe team

Good hotel but a few things missed
Pros:
- Breakfast was lovely, lots of choice, fresh items and custom egg station. Also loved the juicer! Carrots, apples, ginger and other fruits available to make your own juice.
- Location was great - we hired a car and drove around the lakes nearby. Super convenient for so many amazing spots.
- Lots of excellent restaurants nearby. 5-10 drive. Particularly we loved PriesterEgg eco lodge restaurant if you need a recommendation.
- Room was lovely, very alpine - super cute. We had a large superior room with huge balcony (overlooked a graveyard which was a little strange) but mountain views too to make up for it
- Pool area was the highlight - super stunning setting , gardens, mountains very gorgeous.
Cons:
- Had good correspondence with the hotel in advance of our stay who knew we were travelling for baby moon. I don’t feel there were any extra adjustments for this to make our stay more comfortable (I am 28 weeks pregnant so quite large now). Specifically I emailed in advance asking if I needed to book a pregnancy massage in advance, I was advised not necessary, book on arrival. When I got there they didn’t have space for my whole 6N stay which was super disappointing and one of the reasons I booked this place.
- Also there was no offer of extta pillows or anything to make the stay more comfortable which I would expect from a family run hotel like this when a pregnant lady walks in. It didn’t feel very personalised at all.
- We arrived quite late so were given our key and asked to come back the next morning to check in properly. The lady was super nice but there were certain things not explained properly, eg. The use of Leogang card and benefits, how to get into the car park if closed, that afternoon cakes and snacks were included free of charge between 3pm-5pm (we missed this for a few days as did not realise), what time lunch was on etc (first day we try to order at 2pm, lunch had stopped at 1.30pm) - again just a few little things that would make it a better stay.
- 30 degrees and no fan (we asked and told not available)
- Pillows very lumpy
Overall it’s a good hotel in a stunning setting and it absolutely did the job for our trip. It’s good value and convenient for the surroundings. There was a street festival on whilst we were there which was watched from our huge balcony which was fab too! The people working there are lovely and did a good job it’s just that I find staying at smaller places usually means better more personalised service but unfortunately I don’t feel that this time.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share such a detailed and balanced review of your stay with us. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed our breakfast, the beautiful pool area, the alpine-style room and balcony, as well as our location in the heart of the Leogang mountains. It is lovely to know that you had a wonderful time exploring the surrounding area and that the street festival even provided some special balcony entertainment.
At the same time, we are truly sorry that some aspects of your stay did not meet the level of personal attention you were hoping for, especially during such a special trip as your babymoon.
We are particularly sorry about the pregnancy massage. As we had advised you that booking on arrival would be sufficient, we fully understand your disappointment when we could not offer the desired appointments throughout your stay. We will review this communication with our SPA team so that guests with specific treatment requests can receive clearer advice in advance.
We also appreciate your comments regarding the arrival information. Our reception team should have explained the Leogang Card, parking access, our afternoon snack offer and the dining times more thoroughly, especially as you arrived late. Thank you for pointing this out – we will use your feedback to improve our welcome process.
Your comments regarding the pillows and the lack of a fan in the warm weather are also noted. We are sorry that we could not make your room as comfortable as you would have wished.
We are especially pleased that you still describe our team as lovely and our hotel as a good-value place in a stunning setting. Nevertheless, we take your feedback seriously, as our aim as a family-run hotel is precisely to make every guest feel personally cared for.
We hope that, despite the shortcomings, you will remember the beautiful moments of your babymoon and perhaps give us another opportunity to welcome you back and show you the warm, personal service we strive to provide.
Warm regards from Leogang,
Your Madreiter family & the Löwe team
