Great experience, we'll be back to Abernathy Guest House

Our group of friends with kids rented the whole house, fantastic stay over 3 days of Xmas holidays. Beautiful rooms with all amenities, fans, linen, towels. Clean salt water pool where we had fun during those few hot days. Industrial kitchen, cool room, fridges, large dining room for all guests (we always struggle to find a house where we can all sit together for a meal). And above everything, really nice inner court with grape wine leaves as a shade with 2 x barbecues, tables and chairs.

Weekend wedding

We have just spent a 3 night weekend at the guest house for my sons wedding.Wonderful old house to stay in.The rooms were comfortable and the beds pretty good. It has a pool which was a great hit as it was very hot. The kitchens and facilitys were excellent. We were 30 odd people for two of the nights and had plenty of space for entertaining. It has a walk in fridge which was a great help for fridge space, a dish washer and a number of smaller fridges were available as well. Lovely gardens and great places for photos.

Weekend getaway

I did not organise the stay so cannot comment on the staff / owners but it is a great venue for a group of friends.
My stay was for a friends birthday weekend so there was a mix of friends and family. The rooms are a little dated but nothing to complain about. Room lighting was also a little dark.
They need to provide dishwashers and maybe extend the kitchen as it was a little small when cooking or washing up in the kitchen with a group all pitching in to tidy up or cook.
Plenty of kitchen utensils, crockery, glasses, wine glasses etc. for guest use
BBQ area was terrific for all meals and drinks and nibbles.
The pool area is also pleasant.
I would recommend this place we had few fun nights.

Gorgeous setting and peaceful place

We have stayed here numerous times and found it to be very pleasant and the peacefulness is most welcoming.
The lack of a TV in the room is fantastic as the last thing we wanted to do was to sit and watch the box all day and night. Plenty of places to see around this area and an easy drive into town or organise a bus to pick you up for a great day or weekend of wine tasting. The owners are very friendly and will suggest outings and will organise wine tours and things for you. The main room is very cosy and the fireplace is a welcome in the cooler times of the year. The pool is a great place to cool off in the heat of the day as well.
Overall a great place to stay with a chilled bottle of wine or bubbly and just enjoy the long walks and the serenity of this place.
The rooms are clean and tidy as are the showers and facilities.
There is a balcony that surrounds the guesthouse and a good book with a wine is most enjoyable.

Bit disappointed

Bit disappointed — because when I saw their website and photo gallery I thought of it as a fancy guest house and went there with somewhat high expectations.
As mentioned in their website, I would recommend this place only if you're a group of some sort where you know everyone else and you're perfectly happy to share the showers and toilets between 14 guest rooms on the first floor. The rooms were rather small, I thought. There's no taps or sinks in the rooms. No staff on-site, so no change of towels, bathmats and so on. There's no central heating, only a small portable heater in each of the rooms.
My apologies for sounding terribly negative - but thought you'll appreciate knowing beforehand and not be surprised, as I was.
It is a secluded spot, nice for walks and so on. Closest shops are in Cessnock, about 25min round trip.

This reviewer came to look at our premises, but did not stay. Please look at our review,s on our website for guests comments that have actually stayed at Abernethy Guest House. AGH is a group only, self cater accommodation. We are unique in that all guests will all stay in a grand heritage house, all under one roof on two acres of grounds. We are surrounded by state and national forest. Our cost include, sole occupancy, linen, cleaning fee, beds made up, wood for our fire place in winter, pool in summer months, We are very competitive with other accommodation places in the Hunter. We many repeat booking from guests who have enjoyed their stay with us!
